From Where I Sit

Talk about comprehensive immigration reform has been going on for decades...which already tells you a lot. When major issues drag on that long there are heaps of vested interest to be dealt with. From the Democrats seeking more government-dependent voters, to big business seeking cheap labor, and with lots of other groups in between with opposing axes to grind, it is clear that finding a solution cannot be an easy task. Or can it?

The truth is that a solution must be found and soon. The border must be sealed, nailed down and policed. There is no alternative now that cartel violence is spilling over the border and endangering american lives.

Arizona's action to contain that spread of violence deserves praise from all of us. Not because it is a great solution, it certainly is not, but because it is an action that will force the federal government to act. Mexico, after all, is now threatening action against Arizona! What?

Democrats must give up on their obvious efforts to spirit in illegals and somehow get them voting by 2012. Republicans must stop their amnesty brouhaha that shouts down any reasonable compromise.

There is, and always has been,a solution that is workable; SECURE THE BORDER !!!!

Then, and only then, create a rock solid guest worker program that satisfies government, business and the american people. When this is done it will be clear to all that, despite the loud argument to the contrary, it would be physically and morally impossible to deport around 20,000,000 longtime, settled, taxpaying illegal residents.Then put in place a long range path to citizenship that puts this group at the end of the legal immigrant line, OR ALLOW THEM PERMANENT RESIDENCE UNDER A NEW CATEGORY WITHOUT CITIZENSHIP.

Bear in mind that there are children and grandchildren who are american citizens involved here. And bear in mind as well that the failure to close the border has been seen, correctly in my opinion, as a tacit invitation from government and business to these people to jump the fence.

The moment is now, so saddle up and let's get this done. It can be done! Arizona has forced the issue. BRAVO ARIZONA!!!
