The first post-election press conference is over, and so far so good. Trust has never been my long suit, and while questions remain, it is impossible to resist the swell of this magnificent moment in our history. We truly have come a long way.
I remember the bad old days, when black soldiers came back from WWII to re-enter segregation at home. Thank heaven for Harry Truman who began the march to this day by de-segregating the military. That, and the GI Bill, laid the groundwork for the upward mobility that followed the war, and the slow but steady movement toward this day: A black president. How marvelous!!!
Now it is up to Sen. Obama to prove himself. He has the tools; a brilliant intellect, a calm demeanor, a ready smile and that mesmerizing oratory. I do so wish him well. But I will be watching. Watching to see that he understands where his employers stand in the political spectrum. We stand in the middle, the sensible, down to earth middle. The country, and the rest of the world, look to our President Elect for leadership in these so difficult times. He asked for this job, this difficult, exhausting, bone crushing job. He has it. Now all of us should do what we can to help him do it well.
As for all the speculation about him, there was an explanation given, casually mentioned would be more exact. One of his campaign spokespeople said that they swept all of his past under the rug so that he could appear just like the rest of us, and not waste campaign time explaining himself. That rings true, and lessens my doubts substantially, but not entirely. I will still be watching...for signs of income redistribution et al. I hope they don't show up.

very interesting observations...I have to agree with you that it will be VERY INTERESTING to see what happens as Obama builds his cabinet and more of the appointees come from the former Clinton "circle of friends"...will we see new faces and change as promised in the campaign...or will it be jsut more of the same old politics from the Clinton branch of the Democratic party??? time will tell...I hope you keep your eye on this one...
